The Zelda franchise is one of the most popular gaming franchises ever and has been around as long as gaming it’s self. It was the first big fantasy action-adventure game series of its kind and I’d have to say as a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda series and having played all the games in the series including the newest one “Skyward Sword” for Nintendo Wii, my personal favourite is “Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” and I love this game to no end. It’s a classic game in Nintendo history being released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64. It is Also The 5th game in The Legend of Zelda series as well as the first with 3D graphics making it a classic to most if not all gamers out there.
Ocarina of Time is set in Hyrule, but more specific, The Kokiri Forest hiden away behind The Lost Woods where you discover it’s a home to “The Great Deku Tree”, the guardian of the Kokiri Forest, home to the forest children, best known as Kokiri children. These children resemble Elf like humans but remain child form for their entire lives. Each owning their own Guardian fairies given to them by the Great Deku Tree except for one boy known as none other than “Link”, A young mute boy who is destined to be the “Hero of Time”. Link has a hard time fitting in with the other Kokiri children and is referred to the boy without a fairy realizing he was different from the Kokiri children some how. You later find out in the plot twist he is really a Hylian and not a Kokiri. This also helps him stand out as the protagonist to the game.
When the game starts , Link is being waken from a nightmare by “Navi” the fairy sent from the Deku Tree. The dream is about a man in black armor on a horse chasing after a girl on a white horse. When later in the game you find out the man on the horse is “Ganondorf” also known as “Ganon” the primary antagonist and “Zelda” the girl on the white horse who is the Princess of Hyrule.
Navi the fairy then brings Link to the Great Deku Tree who was dying from a curse. Link then breaks the curse but didn’t how ever stop the tree from weakening. The Tree tells link a wicked man of the desert has cursed him and is trying to take over the land of Hyrule and that Link must save the land and stop him. The Great Deku Tree weak and dying gives Link the “Spiritual Stone” of the forest, the Kokiri’s Emerald and sends him and Navi to Hyrule Castle to speak with Zelda, the princess of destiny. While leaving, Link’s close friend Saria gives him the “Fairy Ocarina” a precursor to The Ocarina of Time and wishes him luck.
Link then sets on his new life adventure in the Hyrule field to save Hyrule from the King of the Gerudo tribe, Ganon, who is out to steal the Triforce, a sacred relic that grants wishes to those to obtain it. The adventure which includes the quest to rescue Princess Zelda with Navi as well as Link’s horse Epona that he gains in the game from a Ranch in Hyrule Fields and plays through time using the “Master Sword”. Using the ocarina which Link must learn to play and perform several songs that help him along his quest through dungeons, villages, volcanoes, the bottom of a lake, a haunted desert, magical and mysterious forests and even the belly of a giant fish to awaken and obtain sages to have the power to seal Ganon away forever and to save Hyrule and the obvious, Princess Zelda.
My verdict on “Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” is this game is over all a classic great game and my over all favourite in the series and in general out of all other video games. I would highly recommend it to any new or old gamers who have yet to play it. In my opinion this game deserved all those high ratings, perfect scores and awards as well as the title “The Greatest Game Ever” as I’d like to believe this game is the only game that ever came close to perfection, though I’m sure a lot would say other wise it is my opinion but I’d disagree anyways with others because in it’s time compared to today’s standards of video games it can fall behind in a few aspects – for example graphics, controls and some might even say story, but how ever it was such an amazing game of it’s time when it came out which is why most still play it. That being said It gets the full five stars from me and I’m sure a lot of video game fans who have already played and beat the game would agree.
